“The Entire City”
A hanging archive of ideas and visions for Hamburg’s urban development
171 competitions with 1,427 designs on 1,105 hanging banners: For the first time ever, the creative riches of the numerous architectural competitions of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg are being presented to the public. From 23 June to 14 July 2023, the exhibition “The Entire City. Hamburg Competitions 2017–2023” is presenting the full breadth of ideas for the future of Hamburg. A comprehensive programme encourages all visitors to join in discussions about the built environment and urban design, about architecture and participation.
How do we want to live and work together? And how can our built environment enable that? These are the very questions that urban planners, architects, landscape designers, developers and clients address during competitions that the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has initiated. Usually, the Winner Takes It All – as a rule, only one design can be implemented. And yet all of the submissions are rich in creative power and exciting solutions. Each of them is an intellectual contribution to the city’s future.
This diversity of proposals is now made accessible to the public for the first time: “The Entire City”, designed and curated by Hamburg-based KAWAHARA KRAUSE ARCHITECTS and the architecture critic Kaye Geipel, is a walk-in installation that shows the density of ideas and make them visually and physically tangible. Around 6,000 plans from 170 competitions will form a hanging archive, that fills the industrial hall Schuppen 29 in the HafenCity quarter next to the Elbe River.
Visitors can walk through the plans district by district. Additionally, seven thematic islands within the exhibition go into selected competitions in more depth: “Housing” reflects the revitalisation of the cooperative housing developments of the 1950s to 70s. “Infrastructure” presents ideas for Hamburg’s central station as well as the new rail station at Diebsteich in Western Hamburg. “Office, Commercial Use” shows workplaces of tomorrow, such as the expansion of the Hammerbrooklyn innovation district. The “Conversion, Re-Use” island is dedicated to projects such as the Gröninger Hof or the Postbank area in City Nord, which demonstrate that retaining existing buildings is often the most sustainable solution. “Green and Open Spaces” showcases projects that focus on the interplay between built structures and the green spaces between. “Culture, Education, Sport” addresses cultural buildings in everyday life, using the examples of the Struenseestrasse education campus or the neighbourhood sports centre in Wilhelmsburg. “Urban Design” features the new Oberbillwerder and Grasbrook neighbourhoods as well as the plans for Horner Geest.
